Why Money Flows Downhill

After the rain

After a heavy rain, water doesn't stop to think about where it should go.

It simply follows the easiest path downhill.

The first time, those paths are barely visible.

But every rainfall makes them a little deeper.

Before long, the water doesn't have much choice.

The path is already there.

Money isn't much different

The older I get, the more I think money behaves the same way.

Most spending isn't a brand-new decision.

It's yesterday's decision happening again.

The coffee you always buy.

The takeout after a busy day.

The subscription you forgot was still there.

None of them feel important on their own.

But every payday, the path becomes a little deeper.

Convenience is powerful

I don't think the biggest battle is between spending and saving.

I think it's between convenience and intention.

Convenience asks nothing from us.

It simply repeats what we've already been doing.

Choosing something different takes effort.

Repeating yesterday doesn't.

Changing the path

Years ago I started moving a little money automatically after every payday.

It wasn't because I suddenly became disciplined.

It was because I knew I probably wouldn't make the same good decision every two weeks.

So I made it once.

After a while, saving became the easier path instead of spending.

Not because I had more willpower.

Because I'd changed the landscape.

One final thought

Your next payday will follow a path.

Maybe one you chose.
