Another way to make more
Whenever people talk about making more money, the advice is familiar.
Ask for a raise.
Find a better-paying job.
Work overtime.
Start a side hustle.
All of that can help.
But there's another way to end up with more money, and almost nobody talks about it.
The discount I did not know about
A few years ago, a coworker mentioned buying new tires through an employee discount.
I didn't even know our company offered one.
So I started looking.
Within minutes I found discounts on hotels, insurance, electronics, vehicles, and the same mattress I was already planning to buy.
I realized I'd been ignoring part of my compensation for years.
My paycheck hadn't changed.
What changed was how much of it I got to keep.
My paycheck hadn't changed. What changed was how much of it I got to keep.
The raise you already got
Imagine your employer gave you a $500 raise.
You'd notice.
Now imagine they helped you save that same $500 over the course of a year.
Financially, there's no difference.
Employee discounts.
Retirement matching.
Health benefits.
Professional training.
Legal services.
Preferred insurance rates.
Most employers offer more than people realize.
Most employees never look.
Keeping more matters
For years, I believed getting ahead meant earning more.
Now I think it also means wasting less.
Before I make an expensive purchase, I check whether my employer already has a discount.
Before paying for a course, I check whether it's covered.
Before buying insurance, I compare the employee rate.
Sometimes I find nothing.
Sometimes I save hundreds of dollars.
Those few minutes are worth it.
Pay attention
Two people can earn the same salary for twenty years and finish in very different financial positions.
The difference isn't always income.
Sometimes it's simply paying attention.
I've stopped thinking of workplace benefits as extras.
They're part of my pay.
I've already earned them.
If I don't use them, I'm choosing to leave money behind.
Most of us only get about 1,040 paydays during our working lives.
Your salary matters.
Keeping more of it matters just as much.
Every payday is a decision.
Choose yours.
