The bag in the pantry
Every now and then I forget about a bag of potatoes in the pantry.
Weeks later, I open the brown paper bag and find them covered in long white sprouts.
They have been sitting in the dark.
No sunlight.
No water.
Nobody checking on them.
And somehow, they are still trying to grow.
Then spring arrives
A few months later, I go to the garden centre.
The flowers are already arranged in perfect pots with fresh soil.
They look healthy.
They look easy.
I bring them home.
I water them.
I move them around the yard looking for the best spot.
I check on them every day.
A week later, they are dead.

That never seems fair

The perfect plan.
Sometimes those choices work.
Sometimes they do not.
Meanwhile, the quieter things keep going.
The automatic contribution that leaves every payday.
The pension deposit you barely notice.
The small amount that keeps moving into savings while you are busy living your life.
Not everything grows on schedule
Some efforts show results quickly.
Others seem to do nothing for years.
Some plans fail even when we do everything right.
Others become more valuable than we expected.
That does not mean preparation is pointless.
It means growth has its own timing.
One final thought
I still do not understand why forgotten potatoes can be so determined while expensive flowers sometimes give up after a week.
But they remind me of something.
The things that shape our future are not always the things that look most promising at the beginning.
Sometimes they are the quiet things that keep growing while we are busy looking somewhere else.
